One of God’s most beautiful creations is the magnificent wood duck. His name doesn’t really do him justice, but this guy has amazing, iridescent plumage and red eyes. Seeing a wood duck up close is one of those occasions when you can’t help but say – “Wow, God is very creative”. He used most of the colors on his pallet when deciding what color mr. wood duck should be.

Over Thanksgiving, I spent some time thinking of the thousands of things I am thankful for, and my mind wandered to some of God’s most amazing creations: the Teton mountains, the Grand Canyon, white sandy beaches, aspen trees in the Fall, sunsets – the list seems endless. Sometimes I am gripped by the thought of how amazingly beautiful heaven must be, if all these other places and colors are just for earth.

Then it struck me. Or, maybe He struck me.

What creation is the most beautiful in God’s eyes? What do you think? I had several thoughts until I heard Him whisper …..  marriage. The only creation God called “very good” (Adam), together with the hand-crafted “essential helper” (Eve). Then, He brought her to Adam and performed the first marriage (they are called husband/wife after that time). If Adam was “very good”, then both of them together must have been “awesome” in God’s sight.

In fact, God subsequently tells them to “be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, subdue and rule over it”. When Adam was single, his “job” was tending God’s Garden. That would have been a pretty cool job, but God had more for Adam – much more. Something he was incapable of accomplishing by himself.

Marriage is created to be the foundational institution upon which everything else is to rest. Bad marriages = bad kids, bad neighborhoods, bad schools, bad attitudes, bad habits, bad morals, bad government, bad society. Marriage is also the platform He made in order to showcase His covenant love for His people, and Christ’s sacrificial love for His bride – the church.

Marriage is beautiful to God. Our relationship with our wife is very important to God. More important than our job, our hobbies, our friends, our money – and even our ministry. Marriage is our primary ministry. If it is weak, so is everything else.

Being married is not just a state we find ourselves in. It’s not just a box we check on an application. It is the main thing. It is the primary mission, and launching pad for all other missions.

This is just a holiday reminder that your marriage is beautiful to God. It is crucial to everything else your heart desires to do in this life. Don’t take it lightly. Don’t take it for granted.

Ephesians 5:28-29 – So husbands ought also to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself; for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church.

Your marriage matters !
